Costa Maya is a beautiful stretch of largely undeveloped coastline, in the state of Quintana Roo, in the Yucatan Peninsula
Approximately 360 km (225 miles) south of Cancun. It stretches from Punta Herrera in the north and includes, the Sian Kaan Biosphere, Tampalam, Punticlub, Uvero, Placer, Rio Indio, Mahahual, Puerto Angel and Punta Herradura, ending in Xcalak.
With the cruise ship “Costa Maya Port” opening in 2001 the formerly small fishing village of Mahahual (sometimes spelt Majahual) has grown quickly and continues to do so.
Hurricane Dean hit the area hard in August 2007. However the government realises how important the area is for tourism and massive investments have been made and recovery is evident.
